Distribution revolution: shifting ranks

'The Front Line' was one of several critically acclaimed local films released by Showbox. One of the big dramas playing out in the Korean film business today is the changing landscape among local distributors. It was ignited by CJ E&M, which was re-established as a massive enterprise in the local entertainment business in April, 2011. The company merged film, music, game and media companies under one roof in order to maximize the synergies of vertical integration. It distributed more than 50 foreign and local films under three labels last year: CJ Entertainment, newly consolidated CJ E&M, and its specialty division Filament Pictures. The three labels dominated the industry by grabbing a total market share of 37.4% -- up 7.1% from the days of CJ Entertainment in 2010.Local distributors' market share was much bigger than that of the U.S. direct distributors last year. In 2010, three direct distribs -- Fox, Warner Bros. and Sony Buena (Sony Pictures Releasing Buena Vista Korea) -- were included in the top five distributors list and got a market share of more than 30%.However in 2011, four out of the top five distributors were local. Only Sony Buena was included in the top five ranking with a relatively small 8.5% take at No. 4. Following CJ E&M, Lotte Entertainment ranked No. 2; Next Entertainment World was No. 3 -- with a 15.4% and 9% market share, respectively. Showbox, which was the second-biggest local distributor until 2009, ranked No. 5 with a 7.9% take.Lotte Entertainment has made the most conspicuous advance among local distribs. It held the second rank with a 15.4% market share for the first time since its launch in 2004; this was up by 3.7% up compared to the previous year.Lotte distributed 30 films, of which 21 were local, including last year's No. 1 at the B.O., "Arrow, the Ultimate Weapon."After Showbox Mediaplex sold off its multiplex chain Megabox, Lotte became the only company that can compete with CJ E&M by vertically integrating its film business division with its affiliate exhibition business, Lotte Cinemas. The company also officially launched its international department in 2011 and plans to expand globally. This ambition was underlined in December, when group chairman Shin Dong-bin exchanged a memorandum of understanding with Los Angeles mayor Antonio V

Grammy spotlights Shore's 'Shine'

This year's Grammy nominees in the Best Score Soundtrack category contained four predictable scores and one surprise -- music from "The Shrine," a virtually unknown, low-budget, barely released horror film.Ryan Shore, the L.A.-based composer of "The Shrine," admits he was surprised by the nomination, which apparently beat out a number of better-known scores including "Drive," "The Help," "127 Hours" and "True Grit."Shore (nephew of Oscar- and Grammy-winning "Lord of the Rings" composer Howard Shore) says he used the Grammy365 website -- a "social networking" site available only to members -- to alert potential voters. "I do have a profile there and made mention of my submissions this year, like many others," he says.Grammy awards VP Bill Freimuth says while "vote solicitation" is not allowed at Recording Academy events, it's not discouraged on Grammy365. "I'm sure there will be discussion about it" at upcoming Grammy committee meetings, he says. "There may be changes, or there may not be.""I can't believe the company I'm in," says Shore, who faces off against better-known composers Alexandre Desplat, Clint Mansell and French electronic-music duo Daft Punk in the balloting. He created the entire "Shrine" score himself using samples and synths in his studio.GRAMMY AWARDS 2012Year's biggest star lights up Grammys | Revamped Grammys calls for more trims | Macca guarantees fab MusiCares gala | Creative sparks fly from clash of styles | More liberal take on visual media kudos | Grammy spotlights Shore's 'Shine' Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Key SAG Rule to Survive Merger

SAG's Global Rule 1, which requires members to work only under a union contract, will be retained in a merged SAG-AFTRA, "The Hollywood Reporter" has learned. Opponents of merger had raised the possibility that this would not be the case, since AFTRA has no analogous rule.Retaining the rule may blunt one objection to merger, but a potentially controversial detail apparently remains: if the unions merge, the rule may not apply to all members of the combined organization while all actors would be governed by the regulation, AFTRA broadcasters and singers may be exempt, at least initially. That's the implication of a conversation with a source aware of the new rules, who confirmed the applicability to actors, but when asked about the two other groups said only that some details of SAG-AFTRA rules will be determined by the new union's board. The reason for the distinction is a nettlesome issue for the union: some major news organizations, such as CNBC, are non-union. (AFTRA fought a ten-year battle to unionize that shop, but the National Labor Relations Board eventually ruled in favor of NBC management's position.) AFTRA broadcasters might lose significant job opportunities if Global Rule 1 applied to their work. The provision's name was changed was changed from "Rule 1" to "Global Rule 1" in 2002, reflecting a change in scope from U.S.-only to worldwide. The change, which the union argued was necessitated by runaway production, naturally dismayed producers. WGA and DGA rules have limited applicability overseas, and IATSE and the AFM don't have union-only rules at all.In another development of close interest to actors, THR has learned that dues will decrease for some members of the merged union and increase for others. That will depend, said a source who spoke on condition of anonymity, on the amount of work that the member performs in a given year.Another likely factor, although not cited by the source, is whether a performer is currently a member of both SAG and AFTRA. Both unions' dues structure feature a base amount plus fees that scale according to the member's income during the year. Thus, dual cardholders are currently paying two base amounts in addition to the sliding scale fees.SAG's base dues are slightly lower than AFTRA's. However, the SAG percentages are higher and are assessed up to an earnings cap of $500,000, whereas AFTRA's stop after $250,000. As a result, SAG dues can be significantly more than AFTRA's.
