'Marilyn' Actor Branagh Parallels His Character
NY (AP) Long before Kenneth Branagh stepped into the role of Sir Laurence Olivierin "My Week With Marilyn," there already were strong parallels between them. Both are synonymous with film adaptations of William Shakespeare, delivering lines with implausible realism, and earning accolades for their troubles. Each starred and directed their own successful adaptations of "Hamlet," and "Henry V," that earned Oscar nods for their work on both sides of the camera. (Olivier received an honorary award that included directing the film). With such similarities, it seems fitting that Branagh earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as the legendary actor."He was a master of his craft, and at the same time very vulnerable," Branagh says of Olivier."My Week with Marilyn," is in theaters and stars two-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe. It's based on the writings of Colin Clark, who spent a week with the iconic actress in 1957 while she was filming "The Prince and the Showgirl" in the United Kingdom."When they were making this film, Olivier, saw it as means to reinvigorate his career, especially in the states," Branagh said. "But he found it a challenge to work with Marilyn (Monroe), whom he considered less than professional."Olivier eventually lightened up to Monroe, admitting she was wonderful in the film. But Branagh says his co-star, Michelle Williams, who plays the iconic Monroe, has been wonderful from the start."Before we ever started filming, she learned everything she could about Marilyn, and played her flawlessly.""After some time you live the character, and stop playing it," he added.Olivier was 50 when he starred and directed "The Prince and the Showgirl," and Branagh was 50 when he portrayed Olivier in the film."He had this attitude of, 'It's not over, yet,' and I feel the same way," Branagh said. The actor always has held Olivier in high regard and is humbled whenever critics draw comparisons. That comes as no surprise when you consider Olivier's body of work. Classic performances include Heathcliff in "Wuthering Heights," the title characters in "Othello" and "Richard II," and Andrew Wyke from "Sleuth.""How could you not be an Olivier fan? Just think of that scene in Marathon Man, where he's torturing Dustin Hoffman with a dentist's drill. That scene alone could be responsible for a generation of British not going to the dentist," Branagh said before breaking into laughter. So while he's a serious actor, Branagh also has a good sense of humor. And he's going to need it at the Golden Globes, where Ricky Gervais returns as host.Branagh and Gervais grew up in the same English town of Reading; Branagh moved there as a child from Belfast. Branagh is a year older than Gervais and says their schools often played football games against one another. Branagh was an avid footballer through school."I'm not sure if he ever played," the actor said of Gervais. "But if he did, we certainly played against one another."Because of the hometown connection, Branagh expects Gervais to focus some the jokes about growing up in Reading. And the actor says he has no problem with that.Copyright 2011 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. Endemol lenders reject TW bid
ROME -- Rejecting Time Warner's latest bid, Endemol lenders have given the Dutch content giant a waiver extension until February. Hedge funds and banks now appear poised to take control of Endemol, as the process of restructuring the "Big Brother" maker's $3.7 billion debt continues. Sources close to the negotiations have confirmed an Endemol debt waiver, the third extension since September, on the part of Royal Bank of Scotland and Lehman Brothers, two of the main lenders, as well as by shareholders Cyrte and Goldman Sachs. Time Warner on Monday had renewed its interest in Endemol with a $1.3 billion cash offer, which lenders have rejected. Endemol did not comment on reports that a debt-for-equity swap is now underway, which would slash some $2.6 billion in loans and hand management control over to the lenders. Most significant outcome of that scenario is that Mediaset, the Italo broadcasting giant controlled by Silvio Berlusconi, which owns one-third of Endemol and has made an offer for a majority stake, would see its 33% stake greatly diluted to the point of no longer even being an Endemol board member. Mediaset and Italian equity fund Clessidra have reportedly offered to inject more than $500 million in Endemol to raise their 33% stake to 51%, with lenders owning the minority interest. Within the upcoming two-month period it is possible that Mediaset may up its offer and renegotiate with lenders. Or instead opt to reconfigure its role in Endemol as a mere industrial partner. There was no comment from Mediaset. In 2007, a consortium comprising Mediaset, Goldman Sachs Capital Partners and Cyrte, the investment company in which Endemol co-founder John de Mol is a minority shareholder, paid $3.5 billion for Telefonica's controlling stake in Endemol in a three-way split. But they largely used leveraged loans that now weigh heavily on the unscripted TV giant, whose formats also include "Deal or No Deal" and "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." ABC Beyoncéwon't be shaking a multi-million dollar lawsuit that alleges she walked away from a deal to create a motion-sensing dance video game based on her moves. A NY Superior Court judge denied Tuesday the singer's motion to dismiss a lawsuit brought by video game developer Gate Five.our editor recommendsWhy an Allegation That Beyonc Plagiarized Dance Moves Is Truly Unique (Analysis)Pregnant Beyonce to Design Her Own Maternity Line The suit was filed in April and claims that the pop star "double crossed" the video company on a "whim" by abandoning development of a dance game that was to be calledStarpower: Beyoncé. Gate Five had purportedly spent $6.7 million on the game before the singer demanded more compensation to move forward. Her requests allegedly caused the financier to back out of a $19.2 million financing deal, and Gate Five said it needed to lay off 70 people from its workforce a week before last Christmas. PHOTOS: 18 of Hollywood's Outrageous Entertainment Lawsuits Beyoncé retorted that she had a valid right to exercise the termination provisions of her contract after the plaintiff was unable to fulfill contractual obligations to obtain $5 million of "committed financing" for the project. The singer's attorneys put some of the blame on Gate Five's chief financial backer and quoted Gate Five's president, who purportedly found this person to be "overbearing" and someone who had "entered the picture and ended up disturbing the collaborative atmosphere" between the parties. Gate Five said that the concerns about financing were "disingenuous." According to one court brief filed by the company, Beyoncé could not have had any legitimate concern about a supposed lack of $5 million in financing because, when she terminated, Gate Five was on the eve of closing a $19.2 million financing contract. Attorneys forBeyoncé urged the judge to take a plain reading of the contract, and Gate Five's side argued that the doctrine of prevention barred her from relying on the "lack of financing" excuse because that only happened due to her own conduct. Additionally, the video game company said the doctrine of estoppel applied because Gate Five had relied to its detriment on her assurances that a November 15th deadline for securing the funds was immaterial. Without any written explanation, NY Superior Court judge Charles Ramos rejectedBeyoncé's motion to dismiss the lawsuit on Tuesday. The move means that discovery in the case can move forward, including a possible deposition of the singer. Gate Five is seeking big damages in this lawsuit. According to the company's complaint, theStarpower: Beyoncévideo game was expected to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in profit for Gate Five. The company is also seeking an injunction that would prevent the singer from working on any other video games. Glenn Close Crafts Her Jewel-In-The-Crown Role
Glenn Close Crafts Her Jewel-In-The-Crown Role By Dany Margolies December 8, 2011 Glenn Close in "Albert Nobbs" How can a woman with no family, no inheritance, and no job prospects survive? If we're talking today, and if we're talking America, at least she stands a chance. If we're talking 19th-century Ireland, posing as a man might be the only way. In the screenplay for "Albert Nobbs," by Glenn Close with Gabriella Prekop and John Banville, based on the short story "The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs" by George Moore, Albert is a woman who does exactly that. And how can an actor with astonishing talents, a rich rsum of memorable roles, and a choice of top-rung actors and crew help bring Albert to the screen? Very nicely, thank you, although the task took Close nearly 30 years. In 1982, she played Albert in a theatricalization by Simone Benmussa. The character haunted Close, who continued developing ideas for the film version of the story. For decades, too, Albert disguised herself as a man, surviving by becoming a butler at a fine hotel in Dublin. Like Albert, Close gives the performance of a lifetime. Praise her work, however, and she immediately responds, "How about all the other actors? Aren't they wonderful?" Wonderful indeed, they include Pauline Collins, Brenda Fricker, Mia Wasikowska, Brendan Gleeson, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and, in a spectacular turn, Janet McTeer.Close crafted the role with full attention to details external and internal. First and foremost, she says, she definitely created Albert as a woman, with a woman's feelings. "I thought of her literally as behind the mask, looking out," she says. "The real tricky part of the character was how much to show on your face at any given time, because she had lived behind that mask for so long." Close asked for reshoots because she felt her character had been looking people in the eye too much: "And that makes her look comfortable. We reshot it with Albert more downcast, looking down. That's who she was. And it was better."But the characterization is not humorless. Close created Albert based on classic clowns, whom one can see a touch of in her walk. "I always have felt that one of the things that most attracted me to Albert and kept me loving her all these years is that she's comic and tragic at the same time," Close says. "So, there's a clown side to her." The actor grew up watching Emmett Kelly, and she studied Charlie Chaplin's films to help flesh out Albert. "And the fact that she's 14 when she became a waiter, so the clothes would be too big for hercertainly the pants would be too long and the shoes would be too big," Close says. "So she turns her feet out like Chaplin and has shoes that are just short of being clown size."The actor looks shockingly like a man in the role, and yet, she insists, "I had very little makeup except what was needed to meld the tip of my nose and the size of my ears. It wasn't about a woman pasting hair on her face to be a man but what happens to a woman's face when she lives that life for so long."Noticeably, Close deepens her voice as Albert. But she had other externals to concentrate on, too. "I was thinking of turning my feet out, and what was on my face, and the London accent, so the voice was the fourth layer," she says. "And I had the dialect coach tell me if it started going up, because sometimes I had to be reminded." But she recalls her mentor, Howard Scammonher professor at the College of William & Maryteaching her that there's range in one's speaking voice just as in one's singing voice. "But, yes," she says, "you work on it till you find a place that's comfortable, or else you strain yourself."Close worked with the film's director, Rodrigo Garca, to edit the film. Garca put together the first cut in L.A., then moved the editing office to NY to be with Close while she worked on "Damages." They had shot the film in 32 days. Most of the scenes that take place in the hotel were shot in Cabinteeley House, built in the 18th century in a Dublin suburb. The production set up a greenroom for all the actors, Close says. "And we had tea, and we had these heaters that made everybody red when you sat in front of them; it was freezing cold. And so it was very much like a theater company, actually."In fact, to save time, the entire opening scene was fully choreographed. "From the time the first people walk in to when the aristocrats come in, everybody had their pathway, and we rehearsed it like a play," she says. "So when it has to be broken up in order to shoot bits, everybody knew where they were, in context for the moment. And you could not do that without theater actors. Everybody was totally at home. It was fantastic." Also in today’s edition of The Broadsheet: Helena Bonham Carter has some concerns about Dark Shadows… Hailee Steinfeld is close to playing Ender’s Game… The latest on the quest for the Razzies… War Horse finally finds some awards traction (sort of)… and more. · Christ, it is dead out there. At we’ll always have Christopher Plummer stealing THR’s actor roundtable — no small accomplishment opposite fellow panelists George Clooney, Nick Nolte and Albert Brooks — with a reflection on his hugely challenging role in… The Sound of Music? “Because it was so awful and sentimental and gooey. You had to work terribly hard to try and infuse some miniscule bit of humor into it. […] It’s a very good picture [for] what it is.” Now you know. [THR] · Discussing her latest collaboration with partner Tim Burton, Helena Bonham Carter had this to offer about the vampire saga Dark Shadows: “This is a thing he raced home to see when he was about age 10, so it’s returning to his childhood roots of what he loved watching. It’s actually a really bad, hilariously bad soap opera, and because it’s so bad, he felt he had to make a hugely expensive movie. […] It’s going to be unlike [anything], I think. It’s dangerous to say that. But it’s very original and it’s kind of uncategorizable. It’s going to be impossible to sell, frankly, because it’s just so … it’s a soap opera, but it’s very, very subtle. I don’t know. We’ll see.” [MTV Movies] · Hailee Steinfeld is the latest name touched by speculation around Ender’s Game, reportedly close to joining the adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s sci-fi classic that has already locked in Hugo star Asa Butterfield in the lead. Ridiculous, but like I said, it’s dead out there. One Love ((Un amor))
A Distribution Co. release of an Utopica Cine, Lagarto Cine, Aleph Media, Picnic Producciones, Hibou Producciones, Film Suez, Nunchaku Producciones, Travesia Producciones, Morocha Films, Tarea Fina production. (International sales: Utopica Cine, Buenos Aires.) Produced by Veronica Cura, Alex Zito. Co-producers, Hugo Castro Fau, Fernando Sokolowicz, Lili Monsegou, Paula Hernandez, Mariano Suez, Maria Teresa Arida, Gonzalo Rodriguez Bubis, Claudio Pastorino, Nicolas Kasakoff, Vera Fogwill. Directed, written by Paula Hernandez, Leonel D'Agostino, based on a short story by Sergio Bizzio. With: Diego Peretti, Elena Roger, Luis Ziembrowski, Alan Daicz, Denise Groesman, Agustin Pardella, Valeria Lois.Summer romance and midlife crisis fuse smoothly into a subtle and affecting whole in Paula Hernandez's quietly compelling (if appallingly titled) "One Love." Well-crafted, understated and skilled in its nuanced handling of familiar materials, this deceptively unremarkable tale about a trio of friends reunited is made special by fine perfs from six actors, a script built on ellipses rather than explicitness, and most of all its evocation of emotions that will be uncomfortably familiar to anyone entering middle age. Pic has done better business at home than Hernandez's previous work and merits exposure beyond Spanish-speaking territories. Like the helmer's previous pic, "Rain," "One Love" explores what happens when characters from different worlds are thrown together. But there's one key difference: This time the characters are meeting after a 30-year break. Flashbacks show young Bruno (Alan Daicz), spruce and reflective, and the earthier, more physical Lalo (Agustin Pardella) as inseparable buddies in a late-1970s rural Argentinean pueblo. One summer, romance appears in the lively, flirtatious form of Lisa (Denise Groesman), whose free spirit seduces both boys and opens up a nervous rivalry between them. But one day, Lisa disappears without trace. Pic smoothly shuttles between these events and 30 years later, when Lisa (singer Elena Roger, making an accomplished screen debut) turns up at the home of Bruno (now played by Diego Peretti), now a successful screenwriter married to Nora (Valeria Lois). Nobody, least of all Lisa, seems sure about why she's actually there, but she suggests a trip to their old stomping grounds in search of Lalo (Luis Ziembrowski), now divorced, gruff and slightly lost in life, his bouncing curls long gone. The flashback scenes wonderfully evoke the lazy teenage rhythms of hot summers where there's little to do except swim and figure out how to lose your virginity. The younger thesps do fine work -- the expression on Daicz's face as Lisa sheds her clothes before him is unforgettably hilarious -- and the dialogue is terrific on teen insecurities, although some scenes are over-familiar. Pic suggests it's not as easy to put the past behind us as we like to pretend, and that sometimes it may be best not to. It all falls perfectly into place in one 10-minute tour-de-force sequence in which the older trio converse around a cafe table at night. It's during this superbly acted and scripted scene that the simmering emotions of what has happened in the years between are allowed to quietly emerge, a fine example of how to make dramatic shorthand work. Thesps duly deliver individually and together, and the chemistry keeps fizzing in both time periods, although the older characters are only borderline plausible as their younger counterparts. Peretti, whose comic features have regularly been seen in comic roles, is lively and watchable. Roger plays the older Lisa as a woman whose apparent confidence is undermined by the fact that she's never been allowed to find her place in life, a problem whose roots lie in Argentinean political history. But it's Lalo who's fallen the farthest, and Ziembrowski's marvelously controlled, intense perf never lets us forget that life has taught him to be suspicious of all emotion. Attractive, grungy songs by Axel Krygier mix with more traditional piano-based fare that's very pretty but sometimes unnecessarily underlines mood.Camera (color, widescreen), Guillermo Nieto; editor, Rosario Suarez; music, Axel Krygier; art director, Aili Chen; costume designer, Ruth Fischerman, Clara Valdano; sound (Dolby Digital), Martin Grignaschi; casting, Veronica Bruno. 'Iron Lady' Director Responds to Uproar Over Meryl Streep's 'Over-Emotional' Performance
This story appeared in the Dec. 2 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.our editor recommends'The Adventures of Tintin': What James Cameron Showed Spielberg and Jackson9 Things You Should Know About 'The Adventures of Tintin'Animated, Documentary and Foreign: 3 Key Oscar Categories AnalyzedRelated Topics•The Race•Golden Globes 2012 Pixar's animated movies have had a prize-winning run at the Golden Globe awards, but this year that run could very well come crashing to an end -- and all because of an intrepid young reporter called Tintin. When it comes to recognizing animated films in their own category, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was actually late to the game. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences first gave out an Oscar for best animated feature in 2002. (Its first winner was DreamWorks Animation's Shrek.) It was five years before the HFPA, which had previously lumped animated movies into its comedy/musical category, decided to follow suit and designated a special Globe for animation. PHOTOS: Hollywood's Toy Wars For the past five years, ever since the HFPA created that new trophy, Pixar has ruled the competition. Cars, John Lasseter's celebration of America's automobile culture, took home the inaugural Globe for animation, defeating such contenders as Happy Feet, with its tap-dancing penguins, Monster House and Bee Movie. (That same year, at the Oscars, Happy Feet pulled off a surprise win by upstaging Cars.) And every year since then, another Pixar movie has upheld the tradition: Ratatouille, WALL-E, Up and Toy Story 3 all were winners. This year, Lasseter is back with the sequel Cars 2, in which Owen Wilson's Lightning McQueen and Larry the Cable Guy's Mater take a round-the-world drive in a plot tailor-made to appeal to the HFPA's international constituency. The song-and-dance birds of Antarctica will be back as well in their own sequel, director George Miller's Happy Feet Two. COVER STORY: Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson: The Titans Behind 'The Adventures of Tintin' Don't expect a replay of the 2006 race, though. There are plenty of other fierce contenders who are hoping for a nomination: DWA's Kung Fu Panda 2 and Puss in Boots, Fox's Rio, Paramount's Rango, Disney's Winnie the Pooh and Sony's Arthur Christmas among them. There also are a couple of new kids in toon town: Steven Spielberg, directing his first animated feature, The Adventures of Tintin, making use of the latest advances in motion capture and 3D cinematography with The Lord of the Rings maestro Peter Jackson at his side as producer. PHOTOS: 'Tintin,' 'Happy Feet Two' and 21 Other Awards Season Contenders Featuring Animals The HFPA, which has a demonstrated weakness for big marquee names, is going to find it hard to resist a filmmaker with that kind of pedigree. Plus, Tintin is based on the famous Herge comics character -- famous at least in Europe, from whence many HFPA members hail. Although Paramount won't open the movie in the United States until Dec. 21, almost a week after the Globe nominations are announced, it's already a growing hit around the world, where it grossed more than $160 million in its first two weeks of release via Sony and Paramount. So while Pixar may have the winning track record at the Globes, this year it's the challenger Tintin that is revving up to win the prize. The Somnambulists
An RJ Films presentation of a No Bad Films production. (International sales: No Bad Films, London.) Produced by Richard Jobson, Alan Mckenna. Directed, written by Richard Jobson. With: Jack Monaghan, Michael Nardone, Jack O'Connell, Rhonda Lewis, Belinda Everett, Paul Thornley, Tom Padley, Jonathan Kerrigan, Alan Mckenna, David Fynn, Tobi Bakare, Joseph Creeth, Steven Robertson, Jessye Romeo, Scott Arthur. (English dialogue)The devastating psychological damage experienced by British soldiers who have served in Iraq is presented via straight-to-camera monologues in "The Somnambulists," the sincere but painfully earnest latest feature from Scottish helmer Richard Jobson ("16 Years of Alcohol"). Although credited as written by Jobson, the script is based on extensive interviews with real soldiers, and only the stoniest heart could fail to sympathize with the physical and psychological pain recounted here. Unfortunately, thesping is too often stagy and stilted, as emphasized by the severely stylized approach. Pic should sleepwalk through fests, but is likely to wake up on cable stations. Per press notes, the pic's look and title were inspired by Joanna Kane's recent exhibition of monochrome photographs of death- and life-masks impressed between 150 and 200 years ago, in which the silvery faces stand out against an inky black background. Likewise, the 15 thesps here deliver their monologues (shot in color) from inside a darkened studio, with the framing capturing mostly just their faces, sometimes in extreme closeup, or their bodies from the torso up. At the end of each turn, location-filmed tracking shots (mostly in black-and-white, apart from one or two digitally colored photographs situated somewhere in the scene) show places and people the soldier in question has just mentioned. Each shot ends with someone, presumably a loved one, looking grief-stricken as if remembering the dead. None of the speakers is named (credits list them only as "Man 1," "Man 2" and so on), but from their words, it can be inferred that they represent a spectrum of military personnel, ranging from infantrymen to officers, gung-ho snipers to medics. Some talk about their sense of alienation when returning to civilian life, such as the first (Jack Monaghan) and the last (Scott Arthur), while others focus on traumas experienced on Basra's battlefields. The dust and relentless heat of Iraq rep unsurprisingly recurrent motifs, as does a sense of anger and betrayal directed at all kinds of targets, from Iraqis themselves to former Prime Minister Blair and the civilians back home who would rather forget the war's existence. On paper, the speeches might have a more resounding ring of veracity, but the perfs here are so strident, over-rehearsed and portentously delivered as to drain much of the impact from the stories being told. Helming thesps has never been Jobson's strong suit (aside from Kevin McKidd in "16 Years of Alcohol"), and as with the semi-pro cast of "The Purifiers," he particularly underserves the young actors here who most need a strong directorial hand to reign them in. Elsewhere, the use of visual effects to show the harrowing things these men and women have seen, by "projecting" scenes onto their eyes, is simply tacky. For all Jobson's talk about the visual inspirations for the film, the whole thing might have been more effective if it had simply been made for radio.Camera (color/B&W, HD), James Stoneley; editor, Steven Sander; music, Tim Stevens, Andrew Jones; production designer, Jude Hanly; costume designer, Francessca Oddi; sound (DTS/SDDS/Dolby Digital), Martin Ormond, Myles Hayden; sound designers, Stevens, Jones; visual effects supervisor, Solomon Rogers; visual effects, Rewind FX; stunt coordinator, Marc Cass; line producer, Richard Adams; second unit camera, Adam Duckworth, Jobson; casting, Lucy Jenkins, Sooki McShane. Gay-Rees: Driving force behind high-profile docs
James Gay-ReesAlthough he has been involved in the film business for 20 years, James Gay-Rees isn't jaded. If anything, he finds producing, which he has been doing since 2002, invigorating."It's kind of addictive," says Gay-Rees, who took doc "Exit Through the Gift Shop" to Sundance in 2010 (it later nabbed an Oscar nom) and earlier this year brought "Senna" to the Park City fest, where it won an audience award.Based in London, the producer started his film career at Miramax in 1991 after graduating from England's Southampton U. with a degree in economics and accounting. (His stepfather, director Mel Smith, helmed "Tall Guys" for the studio in 1989.)After a year in NY, Gay-Rees joined Orbit Prods. on the Paramount lot in Los Angeles as head of development, but eventually left to pursue a career in producing.Directed by secretive street artist Banksy, "Exit Through the Gift Shop" marked Gay-Rees' first time producing a documentary. While many critics and viewers speculated that pic was some kind of hoax, it was one of last year's highest-grossing docus."It would have been so hard to engineer that," says Gay-Rees. "It's almost too surreal to be a hoax."Just a year later, the producer made another splash at Sundance with Asif Kapadia's "Senna," about legendary Brazilian Formula 1 racing driver Ayrton Senna."It's very important with documentaries that you focus on great stories that stand out. The backdrop, for instance, Formula 1, comes second to the human drama."Gay-Rees is producing a narrative, "The Wedding Video," directed by Nigel Cole ("Calendar Girls") as well as another doc, tentatively titled "The Pappas Brothers" about Australian skateboarders who self destruct."I wouldn't say that it was an accident that I got into producing, but I don't think if you knew how hard producing was you would not necessarily go into it in the first place. It certainly doesn't get any easier as you get films made. It's just that once you do it, even though you know how hard it is, it gets under your skin and you keep on coming back for more. Fox added that DirecTV sent a proposal out Tuesday. "They have given us no chance to respond before taking an unnecessarily aggressive posture and going public," Fox Networks said in a statement. "It is disappointing that they have chosen bad faith tactics over meaningful negotiation. "We have proposed to keep the Fox Networks on DirecTV for the same price, and on the same terms as they are currently carried while we attempt to work out a fair agreement. Unfortunately, DirecTV has decided that unless they get their way, they are going to pull the plug on their customers Nov. 1." Meanwhile, DirecTV issued its own statement late Thursday. "After months of making little progress in our talks with News Corp and Fox to renew our agreement to carry their regional sports networks and other national channels we've regrettably reached a point where we will be forced to suspend the channels as soon as Nov. 1 unless News Corp is willing to move toward a more reasonable price increase," the company said. According to DirecTV, Fox Networks is seeing a 40% increase in its carriage fees. "They are currently asking our customers to pay 40% more for the exact same Fox channels that they already receive, and that's simply unfair and unwarranted," the company said. "We hope to resolve this situation before any action is taken, but we will do what's necessary to protect our customers from excessive and unwarranted fee increases. We already provide News Corp. nearly a billion dollars a year for their channels, and we have no problem continuing to compensate them fairly." Fox's carriage agreement with DirecTV expired Sept. 30. Fox Networks includes FX, National Geographic Channel, 19 regional sports networks, Fox Movie Channel, Speed, Fuel TV, Fox Soccer and Fox Deportes. Fox broadcast stations and Fox News Channel are not involved in the negotiations. Fox's dispute with DirecTV marks the latest in a series of carriage disagreements for the company. According to preliminary national estimations from Nielsen, ''The X Factor'' averaged a 3.8 rating/10 share and 10.millions of audiences overall , lower in the season average but a lot better than all of its airings the other day in the frame that was disrupted by baseball. Fox introduced its two-hour block in grownups 18-49 in addition to assigned the three-hour earnings of ABC, CBS and NBC. The presence of ''X Factor'' had an effect around the truth shows opposite it, as both NBC's two-hour ''The Finest Loser'' (1.9/5 in 18-49, 5.2 million audiences overall) and ABC's 9 p.m. ''Dancing While using Stars'' results show (2.6/6 in 18-49, 13.5 million audiences overall) lower week to week. At ABC, ''Last Guy Standing'' (3./9 in 18-49, 10.2 million audiences overall) maintained nearly 90% of the 18-49 score inside the 8 o'clock half-hour the other day and again provided nice time-period improvements, placing third within the half-hour among 18-49ers. It absolutely was then your debut of ''Man Up'' (2.4/6 in 18-49, 7.8 million audiences overall), which did OK though a network usually likes to see better retention for just about any new 8:30 half-hour due to rising television usage in individuals days it absolutely was up slightly over ABC's performance at 8:30 on one evening this past year. CBS, the night's leader in 25-54 and total audiences, ruled Tuesday's opening hour with ''NCIS'' (3.8/10 in 18-49, 19. million audiences overall), which tied ''X Factor'' since the night's No. 1 show in 18-49 while standing alone since the top attract both grownups 25-54 (4.7/10) and total audiences. Because the original was lower slightly week to week, 9 p.m. spinoff ''NCIS: Los Angeles'' held steady (3.3/8 in 18-49, 15.3 million audiences overall), placing second in 18-49, tying ''X Factor'' in 25-54 (4.7/10) and winning in general audiences. At 10 p.m., CBS rookie ''Unforgettable'' (2.5/6 in 18-49, 11.9 million audiences overall) shown its first week-to-week gains in 18-49 but got closer to the delivery of ''The Good Wife'' inside the timeslot a year ago. Hollywood Falls Back in Love With Bill Clinton (Analysis)
When all was said and sung, this weekend's series of fundraiserscelebrating former President Bill Clinton's 65th birthday andsupporting the global work of his charitable foundation was like oneof those classic Hollywood romances: Though long separated by time andspace, the lovers catch sight of each other and immediately fall backinto one another's arms.our editor recommendsBill Clinton Honors Edie Wasserman, Lew Wasserman's WifeLady Gaga Drops F-Bomb at Bill Clinton Concert (Video)Bill Clinton on 'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' Musical: Its 'Fabulous'Stevie Wonder Kicks Off Bill Clinton Birthday Concert (Video) It also was a kind of much-needed pep rally for a crucial Democraticconstituency that, despite the oncoming presidential election, hasbeen feeling a bit confused and a trifle tepid recently. With all three of the Clintons-the former chief executive, the currentSecretary of State and their daughter Chelsea-on hand for a Fridaybirthday gala at the Palladium, a Saturday night concert at theHollywood Bowl and a Sunday brunch and golf tournament, the weekendturned into as much a celebration of the industry's widely sharedconnection to the Democratic Party, as it was an appreciation of Bill. In part, Hollywood loves Bill Clinton for the same reason it loves anynatural celebrity. As Alex Avant, son of Motown great Clarence Avant, told the Hollywood Reporter between musical numbers at Saturday'scelebrity-studded concert, "He's a rock star!" But beyond the glitterfactor, there's the industry's admiration for a preternaturally giftedpolitician with legendary survival skills and the obvious fact thatthe former President so clearly and publicly values his associationwith Hollywood. From the start, he and Hillary cultivated friends inthe industry and drew stars and influential executives into theirlegendary network of friends. At one point, they virtually -- andunapologetically -- turned the White House's Lincoln Bedroom into aB&B for visiting West Coast celebs. More important, the Clintons always have taken Hollywood peopleseriously and have treated them as collaborators rather than ATMs.Many of those in attendance at Saturday's concert, for example, were drawn into political activism during the Clinton Administration and, since then, many have been encouraged to embrace global philanthropyand peace-making by the activities of the William Jefferson ClintonFoundation. All this weekend's events featured a cross section ofengaged Hollywood drawn from all ages. "I wanted people here from all over the world," Clinton told thecrowd at the Hollywood Bowl Saturday night. At a moment when the industry's dems are feeling more than a littleambiguous about their party's direction and many suspect the currentWhite House would like to keep a bit of distance for the sake ofpolitical expediency, Clinton's appearances were a joyous reminder ofwhat collaboration can create. That sense was most clearly on display at Saturday night's BowlConcert, which was titled, "A Decade of Difference"-a reference to theClinton foundation's ten years of work. With the one-time first familyin the front row, the evening began with a surprise appearance byStevie Wonder-who sang "For Once In My Life" at the former president'srequest-and moved through Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter, Usher andJuanes to an acoustical set by Bono and the Edge. Wonder made quite animpression when he urged the crowd to give to those who in need, saying "That's the joy of it all. That's why I'm here." On a lighter note, LadyGaga captured the crowd and Clinton's attentionwith a bit of suggestive banter, thanking the former chief executivefor giving her a "Marilyn Monroe moment" and playfully coming on to both Bill and Hillary. The Somali poet and singer, K'naan, struck a soulful note, when hetold the crowd that his "music comes essentially from struggle. Whenthe president took office in 1992, my country was in a desperatestruggle and devastating war, which I was in when I was a boy." Now,he said, he counts Clinton as a friend. "There's something ultimatelybeautiful about the way life takes you," he said. For many, the concert's highlight came when Clinton joined Bono andthe Edge on stage. "When Edge and I think of all the reasons we might want to be here inthe Hollywood Bowl, the Clinton Foundation would be enough," Bonosaid. "But right on top of the list...is that we live in a country nowthat is largely and truly at peace -- north and south -- because ofthe intercession of the 43rd President of the United States, WilliamJefferson Clinton. He is by far the most beloved American since JFKfor all of us Irish." The singer added: "I also want to salute the extraordinary brain hecalls his missus....her patience and impatience in traumatized spotsof the world is something we should all think of." Bono then broke into special version of "Sunday Bloody Sunday," adding afinal verse: "On another broken hill, red crosses and a crescent mooncollide. Pilgrims pray to know God's will. Scratching in the dirt and queueing up to die. Scorched earth or a cruel sun. Is this the battleJesus won? Oh no. No." As Bono's voice trailed off, Clinton blinked back tears. After the duo finished their set, the former president wrapped hisarms around both men. "We've been friends for a long time," Clinton told the crowd. "And Iwant to say to Bono, thank you for the One Campaign. Thank you forcampaigning against debt, thank you trying to save the foreign aidbudget of the Secretary of State of the United States, thank you forcampaigning against poverty." He added: "I want to say to Edge thankyou for doing something very close to my heart. When Katrina almostdestroyed the most unique, cultural and musical resource in America inNew Orleans, this man led an effort to raise money for the all thosemusicians in New Orleans area who had no money but who are part ofAmerica's history and I will never forget it." Throughout the program, the industry's most politically active memberssat listening in the VIP section. The crowd included Ron and KellyMeyer, Steve Bing, Michael King, Barbra Streisand and James Brolin,Ashton Kutcher, Ellen DeGeneres, Lawrence Bender, Jeremy Piven, MariaBello, and Maria Shriver. Also attending the concert was Laura Ling, who was imprisoned in North Korea with fellow U.S. journalist Euna Leeand later rescued after intense negotiations by Clinton. Ling helped kick off the show by telling the audience, "PresidentClinton didn't just save my life. Every day he is saving lives around the world." The depth of Clinton's appreciation for Hollywood as acollaborator-and for its culture and traditions-was clearly signaledby the weekend's first scheduled event, remarks delivered at amemorial service for Edie Wasserman, a beloved industry figure. Theformer president's connection to the woman he eloquently praisedFriday was far from pro forma. It was, in fact, both long andpersonal. In politics, as she did so often in his storiedentertainment industry career, Edie Wasserman was her husband Lew's talent spotter. A deeply committed Democrat, she was one ofHollywood's earliest supporters of both Clinton and Jimmy Carter and, while her husband deeply admired Lyndon Johnson, Edie numbered LadyBird Johnson among her closest friends. While anyone with a sense of Hollywood history knows that LewWasserman virtually created the industry's modern structure, fewerrecall that Lew and Edie together essentially brought what we now think of as Hollywood's political dimension into being. In themid-1960s, they created the town's first lavish politicalfundraisers, the forerunners of this weekend's events. With Edie as his adviser and Arthur Krim, then chairman of UnitedArtists as his partner, Wasserman established a circle of major donorscalled the President's Club, whose largesse was sufficient to buy members face-time with the chief executive. Lew established aparticularly close relationship with Johnson, one that was cementedwhen he hand-picked LBJ's most trusted aide, Jack Valenti, to becomepresident of the Motion Picture Assn. of America and, thus, the industry's Washington lobbyist. ''What you have to understand is, ifHollywood is Mount Olympus," Valenti later would say, "Lew Wassermanis Zeus.'' And from their fabled Beverly Hills Olympus, Edie played the role ofHera-constant helpmate and conscience. Edie and Lew were long-timepolitical and financial supporters of civil rights and-because bothhad been denied a college education by their families' financialcircumstances-they were generous donors to scholarship funds. In fact, when Clinton awarded Lew the Presidential Medal of Freedom in a 1995White House ceremony, he particularly singled out his manycontributions to minority scholarships. It was political theme-one of the constants of his career-to whichClinton returned during his remarks at Saturday night's concert.Speaking of his own hard-knock upbringing in Arkansas, Clinton mused, "Nobody climbs any ladder alone. We are not going to build thiscountry back by telling people they are on their own." It was the heart-felt sentiment of a man who clearly felt he was amongfriends-and, as this weekend's financial returns for his foundationwill demonstrate, those friends clearly still love him for feelingthat way. Bordertown: Laredo: TV Review
For that drugs officials employed in Laredo, Texas, an increasing feeling of futility is difficult to deny. With drug cartel violence spiraling unmanageable on the other hand from the Rio Grande in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, and billions in illegal drugs streaming over the Puente p las Americas bridge in to the U.S. every year, each large bust is supported through the realization of what gets through. "People need to comprehend that people're trying good, but we're fighting huge organizations," Sgt. Robert Sifuentes, among the stars of the&E tense and lighting new ride-along cop show Bordertown: Laredotells your camera throughout the premiere episode. PHOTOS: Fall TV's 12 Most Anticipated Shows Illustrating what the undermanned unit is facing, audiences trail Sifuentes and the officials because they make an effort to disrupt the flow of cartel marijuana, cocaine along with other drugs in Laredo, that your super-title assures us is "ground zero for that fight against drugs." Unlike overblown law and order reality fare as Copsor Steven Segal Lawman, the experience here's amazingly authentic. To begin with, the males who from the Sifuentes' squad are of Hispanic origin--much like the drug sellers and smugglers they're after. Considering the fact that the populace of Laredo is 95% Hispanic, that's not entirely surprising, but with the help of a soundtrack of boleros, mariachi horns and flamenco guitars, Bordertown: Laredoembraces that demographic reality, making the crowd reflect on its stereotypes about national identity, legal and illegal immigration. Executive producers Al Roker (The Show, D.E.A.) and C. Russell Muth (American Chopper) have shipped a fantastically edited, documentary-style portrait of the American town and also the problem threatening to overwhelm it. While each episode develops dramatic tension as initial tips and drug dealing busts inevitably result in the commitment of taking lower a significant cartel shipment, the personas from the people from the drugs team prove just like engaging. "Guess what happens really pisses me off?" Investigator Rodriguez yells in a lady that has been charged with transporting 60 pounds of packed marijuana within the trunk of her vehicle, and whose four-year-old daughter sits within the back burner. "You've your young girl there. I don't care what goes on for you, however your young girl laying there's innocent." Not even close to becoming an exploitative reveal that ridicules the accused, Bordertown: Laredodutifully safeguards the details of their suspects, and often stresses their humanity. PHOTOS: Fall TV Preview 2011: The Coming back Shows "People don't know how easy it is to buy swept up within the drug trade lower within Laredo," Sifuentes states after his officials arrest a youthful mother who's found with 60 pounds of packed marijuana within the trunk of her vehicle. "The drugs and also the money to become made is everywhere. This lady likes you her kids, I understand that, however i mean shestill moved 60 pounds, she might get time with this.Inch Without offering a few of the particulars from the spectacular busts that occur throughout the very first two episodes, the reality is the officials on a single large bust are none too very happy to learn their forklift is damaged, needing these to unload the breath-taking payload manually. Among the couple of humorous moments, they uses the occasion to poke fun at one another's aging backs. Though a lot of Bordertown: Laredois ingrained with Cormac McCarthy amounts of anguish concerning the indisputable changes being wrought on south Texas through the Mexican cartels in addition to America's appetite for his or her items, additionally, it consists of a reasonable little bit of old-fashioned, roll-up-your masturbator sleeves optimism. "I really like working drugs," states Sifuentes. "I understand my men love working drugs because I am talking about, to us, we seem like we're taking lower the scum of the world. They are people who are trashing our communities and trashing our metropolitan areas. That's what causes it to be fun taking these men lower." That question of whether that fight can nonetheless be won is the reason why Bordertown: Laredoso compelling. A&E Television Systems

Jobs dies at 56
Jobs, pictured within 1979Steve Jobs with U2 in 2004.Apple Boss Jobs stands up the brand new apple iphone which was introduced at Macworld on The month of january 9, 2007 in Bay Area.Steven Jobs, the pioneering mogul who brought Pixar Animation and Apple to banner success and grew to become an innovator within the computer, electronic devices and animation industries, has died. He was 56. Hollywood didn't always accept Jobs -- there have been tiffs within the prices of music along with other choices within the iTunes store and also over the truth that Apple made iTunes content unplayable on non-Apple products. However in an atmosphere by which huge amounts of customers were unlawfully installing music along with other content from P2P file-discussing sites, the number of products Apple introduced under Jobs -- the ipod device with the iTunes Music Store, the apple iphone and also the iPad -- made the legal (and for that reason, for showbiz, a minimum of potentially lucrative) use of digital content possible and popular, weaning some customers from the piracy habit.Jobs first acquired fame among the "two Steves" -- Steve Wozniak was another -- who co-founded Apple Computer inside a garage in 1976. He lost charge of the organization in 1985 and saw his status and private fortune dwindle within the next decade. But throughout that point he acquired from George Lucas' Industrial Light & Miracle, in a bargain cost, a little computer-graphics unit which was rapidly remonickered Pixar. Jobs put their own cash in to the money-losing company and first viewed it provide the blockbuster "Toy Story" making him a billionaire.Over time, Disney bought Pixar, and Jobs grew to become a button House's biggest investor, with holdings dwarfing individuals associated with a other individual, along with a person in its board. At that time, he would be a well-established entertainment executive, getting came back to Apple and brought it to promote domination inside a new arena: music. Under Jobs, Apple introduced the very first popular system for legal music installing: the mixture of iTunes software, the iTunes Music Store and also the ipod device very good music player. The ipod device, ignored by experts at its introduction to be too costly, too cool and too associated with Apple's software, grew to become an legendary entertainment product and changed Apple right into a key player in electronic distribution, including Television shows and films. Personally, Jobs was among the corporate world's best pitchmen. His looks at trade occasions, particularly the Macworld tradeshow in Bay Area, always clad in the trademark black mock-turtleneck shirt, were among any year's most anticipated tech occasions. Apple fans would hold on every word, awaiting the famous "Yet another factor" in the finish, which frequently signaled some astonishing cool product, such as the iMac or ipod device. He was famous for his capability to persuade -- or bully -- people into doing the impossible, or at best convince them the impossible was possible. Individuals who labored carefully with him frequently referred to an abrasive, arrogant and from time to time petty leader who didn't brook disagreement. Companies or people who went afoul of him were frequently "Steved" -- fired around the place. However for better or worse, Jobs' resolve for high-quality, cutting-edge items made him indispensable for that companies he went. His career resurrection after his first flameout with Apple was, because the unauthorized biography "iCon" place it, "The finest second act within the good reputation for business." Born in Bay Area and quit for adoption, Jobs was elevated within the Northern California area that will eventually become known as Plastic Valley, becoming an adult around most of the future leaders from the digital revolution, including Wozniak. He joined Reed College after senior high school but soon left. After driving India, he teamed with Wozniak inside a venture to create then sell small, pre-put together computer systems, something no business had ever attempted before. The prosperity of their Apple II produced the pc industry almost on your own, however the market found be centered through the cloneable IBM PC design and Microsoft's operating-system. Apple responded back in 1984 using the Macs, the very first pc to effectively mass-market a graphical interface. The launch of Macs were built with a hint of Jobs' future. Ridley Scott helmed a "1984"-designed commercial offering the launch from the Mac, and also the commercial grew to become among the legendary spots in TV history. Jobs was forced from Apple in 1985.Only the the coming year, George Lucas -- requiring cash for his divorce settlement -- offered the nascent Pixar to Jobs just for $ten million. Pixar would be a money pit in the beginning, though its Renderman software grew to become the foremost and most widely used cartoon software. Jobs' funds and persistence were running low, however when Pixar's "Container Toy" won the animated short Oscar, he discussed Pixar's first feature deal, for "Toy Story." The image opened up to rapturous reviews and socko B.O. When Pixar required its stock public days later, Jobs grew to become a billionaire."Toy Story" was the very first inside a three-picture cope with Disney and the start of an unparalleled run of hits from Pixar.Jobs came back to Apple in 1997 and started an immediate turnaround. The business's items rapidly found reflect Jobs' preferences. He loathed buttons on handheld products, and also the result was the sleek, uncluttered interface from the ipod device, apple iphone and iPad.Apple's success with iTunes and also the ipod device managed to get a significant player in entertainment, but record labels chafed at Apple's insistence on the flat 99 for each song. ITunes assisted reduce but didn't finish illegal downloads, therefore it did not put huge sums in labels' coffers. The main beneficiary, went the complaints, wasn't artists or labels but Apple itself. With Jobs responsible for Pixar and also the prickly Michael Eisner running Disney, discussions on the renewal of Pixar's distribution cope with a button grew to become highly contentious. Disney maintained follow up privileges to many Pixar game titles, such as the "Toy Story" franchise, and started developing its "Toy Story 3" without Pixar involved. Meanwhile, inside a well known 2004 investor call, Jobs mocked Disney's characters, singling out "Lion King 1 1/2" as "embarrassing." An impasse within the discussions appeared inevitable. Jobs wouldn't sell Pixar for money, and Disney wouldn't pay what Jobs was asking. The answer, it switched out, was for Disney basically to pay for Pixar to consider over its animation efforts. Disney compensated $7.4 billion in 2006 to merge with Pixar. Jobs acquired a 7% stake in Disney along with a chair around the board but threw in the towel his posts as Pixar chairman and Boss, and Pixar executives Erectile dysfunction Catmull and John Lasseter required control of the Disney animation slate. Jobs drawn another techno-surprise in 2007, unveiling the lengthy-rumored Apple apple iphone. Using its smooth touch screen face and media-centric design, neither which have been anticipated by tech-viewers, the apple iphone demonstrated a game title-changer for that mobile phoneOrPersonal digital assistant business, just like the ipod device have been for that music business. But Jobs' health was starting to fail even while his companies were achieving their finest success yet. He was treated for pancreatic cancer in 2004. He appeared to recuperate but looked gaunt in public places looks in 2007 and 2008, causing gossips in regards to a recurrence of cancer as well as gossips of his dying. He introduced late in 2008 he were built with a hormonal discrepancy which was leading to him to slim down, as well as on Jan. 14, 2009, he required a medical leave of absence from Apple. It had been later says he went through a liver transplant throughout his leave. He continued to be gaunt, however, and required another health-related leave of absence at the end of 2010, among gossips his cancer had came back and that he was near dying.Jobs abruptly resigned as Boss of Apple on August. 24, 2011, and was chosen chairman from the board. He suggested Tim Prepare as his successor Prepare had recently been becoming Apple Boss since The month of january, when Jobs required another medical leave from the organization, though he still made the majority of the major choices at Apple. Jobs resented publicity about his personal associations, that could be a challenge. He found his birth parents and biological sister, the novelist Mona Simpson. He's made it by his wife, Laurene Powell a boy and three kids. Contact David S. Cohen at david.cohen@variety.com

Broadway keeps faith
Contrary to previous years, Broadway enjoyed a boost as "The Book of Mormon" rang in the Jewish New Year with another record-breaking week.
Remember when the Jewish holidays used to mean a dip in Broadway sales? Not this year. Although Rosh Hoshanah fell on Thursday, overall Rialto sales upticked, with devoted auds still turning out for another record-breaking week at "The Book of Mormon" and a crowd of converts keeping "Follies" above the $1 million mark. The week's total, up about $275,000 to $18.7 million for 22 shows running, had some observers wondering if the traditional dip for the Jewish holidays was more a product of when the holiday fell during the month -- early September always being harder for Broadway overall than late -- than of the holiday itself. Or maybe sales were kept aloft in part by family auds freed up by school closings. "Mormon" ($1,310,226), topping yet another box office milestone at the Eugene O'Neill Theater, and "Follies" ($1,132,226) were two of six shows to stake out a spot in the millionaires club last week. In general, most of the Street's top earners saw sales rise while those in the middle of the pack -- including "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" ($765,738) and "Memphis" ($722,193) -- dipped, although none of the slowdowns by individual shows were dramatic. Among plays now in previews, "Relatively Speaking" ($664,407) -- the trio of one-acts by Woody Allen, Ethan Coen and Elaine May -- slipped by about $50,000, perhaps because the curiosity factor pushed some theatergoers to earlier previews. "The Mountaintop" ($584,897) played a full eight perfs vs. five the prior frame, posting solid if not stellar sales for a show starring big-name thesps Angela Bassett and Samuel L. Jackson. As is the case with most Broadway plays, both shows, as well as the Roundabout's nonprofit revival of "Man and Boy" ($216,636), hope for a boost from reviews, since playgoing auds remain the rare demo to be notably swayed by critical opinion.
