American Horror Story (Series; FX)

Credits: Filmed in Los Angeles by Ryan Murphy Prods. in association with Twentieth Century Fox Television. Executive producers, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Dante Di Loreto. 60 MIN.With: Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott, Jessica Lange, Dennis O'Hare, Taissa Farmiga, Evan Peters, Frances Conroy, Alexandra Breckenridge, Jamie Brewer.Although there have been successful horror anthologies, episodic television has a frightening track record with the genre, largely because suspense is so difficult to sustain. Yet given its theatrical popularity and "The Walking Dead's" success, it makes sense for somebody like FX to try. Enter "American Horror Story," a stab (heh heh), from "Glee's" Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, at recycling jump-out-at-you conventions, which in its own way displays excesses similar to later seasons of Murphy's signature FX offering, "Nip/Tuck." The creative team's fondness for the material appears unquestionable; whether they can exorcise what ails their show remains the real mystery. Of course, for such a series to work (and past attempts, like CBS' "American Gothic," didn't), there has to be a solid character foundation. In this case, it's the Harmon family: Seeking to save a marriage fractured by a miscarriage and infidelity, psychologist Ben (Dylan McDermott), wife Vivien (Connie Britton) and bratty teenage daughter Violet (Taissa Farmiga) head West, from Boston to L.A. Why is this old house they've found so cheap? Because a murder-suicide occurred in the basement, the realtor explains. But hey, the place is half the price of other homes in the neighborhood, and for that money they'd have to live in the valley -- which is really scary. So in they move, only to be warned by their neighbor with Down's syndrome (Jamie Brewer), "You are going to die in there" -- which, in its vague echoes of lines from "The Exorcist" and "Poltergeist II," represents the first homage of many in Murphy and Falchuk's script. The main problem with a haunted-house series is making things scary without becoming so alarming the family flees screaming into the night in episode one. A second hour, however, rather than offering clarity or reassurance, only reinforces these doubts. Creatively unleashed, the producers have concocted a sure-to-be-polarizing introduction that's a truly weird, David Lynch-style experience -- complete with bondage outfits, satanic images and the creepiest opening-title sequence ever. Beyond the central family, everyone seems to have checked in from "The Shining's" Overlook Hotel -- from the wild-eyed former actress next door (Jessica Lange, oddly channeling her work in "A Streetcar Named Desire") to the spooky maid who, in the pilot's niftiest device, appears one way (Frances Conroy) to Vivien and another (Alexandra Breckenridge) to Ben. "AHS" derives inspiration from so many horror films there's some fun in simply identifying those moments. But there's also a surreal quality that feels wildly overdone -- and periodically risks tumbling from inspiring fright into inducing giggles. Britton is a strong yet vulnerable lead, and the couple's marital woes feed into the tumult of their unsettling surroundings. By contrast, the daughter's troubles fitting in at her new school and interaction with a disturbed boy feel like unpleasant dead ends. For FX, there's merit in trying to elevate the storytelling level in modern horror films from what has too often devolved into torture porn and splatter. And as a proliferation of reality TV programs demonstrate, people still love ghost stories. "Horror Story's" spirit-guides Murphy and Falchuk certainly silenced naysayers with "Glee." Nevertheless, any more missteps and this wispy specter will descend the stairway to silliness -- at which point, it'll be hard to prevent the fat lady from singing. Known primarily for its hourlong series, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s Fake Empire has sold a half-hour comedy pitch to Fox. Fake Empire’s Schwartz, Savage and Len Goldstein will executive produce for Warner Bros. TV. Fake Empire has 3 series on the air this season, NBC’s dramedy Chuck and the CW dramas Gossip Girl andHart of Dixie. On the feature side, Schwartz, repped WME and the Gotham Group, soldBromance to Montecito and DreamWorks and Parents Weekend to Kopelson Entertainment. Writer-director Nancy Hower and her writing/producing partner, actor John Lehr, have sold a half-hour comedy pitch to NBC. Titled Retreat, the project is set in a corporate retreat. The sale was made based on a demo Hower and Lehr shot, which Hower directed and Lehr starred in. The demo, made in association with EUE/Screengems, was probably helpful, as the duo uses a hybrid scripted/improv style where their scripts are incredibly detailed but dont feature any dialogue. ABC has bought an untitled time travel drama project from writer Scott Veach, with ABC Studios and Warren Littlefield producing. This marks a reunion of all parties. Last year, Veach, repped by CAA and Leverage, and Littlefield developed a drama for ABC and ABC Studios based on the book City of Dreams.

New Kristen Stewart As 'Snow White' Photos Emerge

FROM MTV MOVIES: Kristen Stewart looks like she's ready for battle. Some photos of the "Twilight" star on the set of "Snow White and the Huntsman" have hit the Internet. In them, Stewart is wearing her previously teased armor as she films scenes at Marloes Sands Beach in Pembrokeshire Wales, U.K., this week. Photos on Screenrant.com show the actress riding a white horse alongside a group of extras dressed as medieval soldiers. They are riding through the water for what appears to be some sort of battle scene. In some on-set candids, the ponytail-sporting actress laughs and walks around the set of the Rupert Sanders-directed flick. Stewart recently debuted her longer locks for the film at London Fashion Week. No signs of co-stars Charlize Theron (the Evil Queen), Chris Hemsworth (the Huntsman) or Sam Claflin (Prince Charming) in the new photos. The film is expected to open June 1, 2012. Nervous nets shuffle segs

ABC has chosen to change the running order of a few episodes of rookie shows including Pan Am. Other nets are doing the same. NBC has reordered the episodes for debuting laffer "Up All Night."Sometimes the best way for a TV series to tell its story is out of order. As networks try to make the best impression with new series each fall, execs occasionally make the tough call to air them with episodes out of sequence -- even when it risks confusing their storylines early in their run.ABC disclosed that the second and third episodes of new dramas "Charlie's Angels" and "Pan Am" will be trading places. While it hasn't been announced yet, a third ABC series, rookie comedy "Suburgatory," will also swap its third and second episodes. NBC half-hour "Up All Night" has exchanged its third and fourth segments.Changing the order of episodes is nothing new in primetime. Because conventional industry wisdom dictates that a series' audience level is set in stone within its first three episodes, frontloading the most compelling installments becomes paramount. But for a drama series like "Pan Am," a 1960s-era evocation of the airline's early days with some serialization in its plot, the writers' conception of how their story will unfold is forced to change. "They sit in a room and plan out arcs for the season and talk about how those episodes build," said Channing Dunghey, senior VP drama development at ABC. "And we set out with the intention of those unfolding in that direction, but that's not always the case."To wit, ABC confirmed what was initially slated to be the third episode of "Pan Am" had to be re-edited to eliminate references to plot points raised in the episode originally scheduled to precede it.Another source suggests that there's been much internal debate at ABC about what aspect of "Pan Am" is its strong suit: the romantic lives of its characters or the tonally different espionage element. Dunghey denied any such consideration prompted shuffling for "Pan Am"; she declined to elaborate citing sensitivity regarding revealing storylines ahead of broadcast.Reshuffling is a less disruptive proposition to TV shows with more self-contained storylines such as procedurals like "Angels" and sitcoms like "Suburgatory," which are developed to have episodes that are often deliberately interchangeable. But even "Angels" nearly made a very risky reshuffling. A source familiar with the "Angels" production plans said the net considered having an episode other than the pilot serve as the premiere episode because of concerns that the cast chemistry deemed crucial to the series' appeal hadn't sufficiently gelled enough to serve as a fitting introduction for viewers.Sources say CBS has long informed producers with series in its primetime lineup to avoid serialization in the first five or six episodes of a season in order to provide the network with flexibility in scheduling. Of course, that's easy for a net with a sked comprised almost entirely of procedurals and sitcoms. But sometimes even liberal manipulation of a show's narrative timeline doesn't get in the way of viewers' enjoyment. Last season, ABC midseason entry "Happy Endings" was rife with disjointed plot developments because the network aggressively reordered the lineup to get what it thought were the best episodes out first. For instance, episodes originally slated to run second and third ended up airing 10th and 11th (out of 13).But regardless of the flipping, "Endings" wasn't affected. The series drew enough ratings and buzz to not only get a second-season order but transfer to a plum timeslot following hit "Modern Family." TV history is littered with examples of short-lived shows that underwent episode reshuffling. Whether that precipitated or forestalled their demise is subject to interpretation; even whether failed shows undergo reshuffling at any greater rate than successful ones is subject to debate.Sometimes a swap isn't necessarily the result of a creative choice. Episode flipping has become more common in recent years due to a production technique being utilized more often in the TV business known as "cross boarding": shooting scenes from two or more different episodes in one day because they share a common setting. That cost-conscious move can sometimes bring later episodes to completion before ones that precede it, resulting in some ad hoc resequencing.Picking the right follow-up episode can be critical should ABC find itself in the enviable position of having a ratings windfall for either premiere. Have an episode that doesn't feel tonally consistent with the pilot -- which can be tricky in the early days of a series' run when it is still trying to find its creative voice -- and all those fickle viewers that turned out can be turned away.Too many series in recent years that enjoyed strong initial interest have found their fortunes reversed quickly enough to last just one season or even less. Charlie Sheen-Less 'Two . 5 Men': Exactly what the Experts Say

Johnson Misses Charlie Sheen: 'There's No Hard Feelings'How Charlie Sheen's Character Dies on 'Two . 5 Men' 'Two . 5 Men' Poster Features (Maybe) Naked The CBS comedy came back Monday evening because of its ninth season without original star Charlie Sheen -- who had been fired in March -- but with a brand new cast member, , who became a member of the cast in May. STORY: How Charlie Sheen's Character Dies on 'Two . 5 Males' Sheen's character, Charlie Harper, was wiped out off after being pressed before a subway train by Rose (Melanie Lynskey), his stalker/neighbor with whom he'd elope to Paris. But she got revenge after learning he'd been with another lady. The episode began served by his funeral, and also the actor didn't appear. Meanwhile, Kutcher's Walden Schmidt, a heartbroken Internet billionaire, turns up following a suicide attempt and eventually ends up purchasing Harper's former home. PHOTOS: Charlie Sheen's Crazy Twit Photos The episode wasn't readily available for review before it broadcast, a lot of experts' takes hit the net late Monday. USA Today's Robert Bianco recognized Kutcher and co-star Jon Cryer for his or her capability to "make repeated references to Walden's sexual organs but still appear sweet together." He added the show was looking for a big change before Sheen got fired for his public rants against his then-bosses on the program. PHOTO: Charlie Sheen, Bond Backstage at Emmys "Change is definitely hard, however in this situation change was both inevitable but for the best," he authored. "Even when there was a method to refresh Sheen's Charlie Harper character, who had been veering perilously near to 'one old joke' status, Sheen didn't seem to be as much as the job. He looked too attracted to become the energetic, magnetic Goodtime Charlie the role needed, and that he appeared too tired and, possibly, not really prepared to provide the show his best - which pressed a lot of comic load last season onto Cryer's Alan." He added that Kutcher brings new energy towards the lengthy-running comedy. PHOTOS: Charlie Sheen Tour "What fans need to hope Kutcher gives this mixture, apart from a brand new character, is really a new energy along with a better balance," he authored. "And when the continual screams in the studio audience are any suggestion, he provides extensive fans. They and also the show appear to stay in decent hands." Hank Steuver from the Washington Publish opined the show hasn't featured any "complicated story lines" which Kutcher "shown precisely how simple it's.Inch "2 . 5 Males isn't too funny, never too odd, never too naughty," he authored. "Again, for this reason it's on in hospital lounges and also the waiting room in the oil-and-lube." PHOTOS: 's Career Over time He added that the "golden" moment came right before Kutcher's "grand entrance" -- a little by which John Stamos turns up to purchase Charlie Harper's old house, "remaining only lengthy enough to create the episode's requisite obliquely homophobic joke.' The Chicago Sun-Occasions critic Lori Rackl recognized the episode and Kutcher. "Monday's opener got on a remarkably nice beginning, thinking about it happened inside a funeral home," she authored. "Penis and fart jokes is one factor - and also the first episode managed to get obvious the show expects to help keep turning individuals out. But dying is really a harder sell, before a studio audience filled with fans." She added that Kutcher held their own like a newcomer towards the lengthy-running show. STORY: Mocks Charlie Sheen on Emmys Stage "Filling the void left with a well-established character is not easy, but Kutcher mostly been successful," she authored. "Sometimes his character appeared a little like Lennie petting the bunnies by Rodents and Males, but provide him a couple of episodes, and that he should get ready nicely." Scott Pierce from the Salt Lake Tribune noted that it wouldn't happen to be surprising when the episode have been a disappointment -- however it wasn't. Actually, he'd high praise for that premiere. STORY:Charlie Sheen-Less 'Two . 5 Males': Exactly what the Audiences Say "The ghost of Charlie hung within the latest version of 2 . 5 Males, however it didn't exactly cast a pall," he authored. "It released the show into what appears like an encouraging new chapter. It had been funny. Really funny." He added the authors put in "some good bonuses for fans," including Stamos' cameo (Stamos was among the stars whose names were sailed just as one Sheen alternative). VIDEO: Charlie Sheen Roast: 10 Things Been sent in the Comedy Central Event The Chicago Tribune's Robert Lloyd echoed that sentiment, writing the months are on a "promising" start. "Kutcher brings a gentleness to some series that may be brittle and sour, misanthropic and misogynistic, and temperamentally middle-aged," he authored. "His presence might allow Cryer to experience some more gratifying, less strident notes, although it can be [series creator Chuck] Lorre, obviously, to reach that goal.Inch Related Subjects Charlie Sheen CBS Jon Cryer 2 . 5 Males

Marilu Henner on Her Unforgettable New Gig and Her Infallible Memory

Marilu Henner Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010. That was the day CBS aired a 60 Minutes report on Marilu Henner's rare condition - highly superior autobiographical memory (HSAM) - that gives her the ability to remember everything. Only six known people in the world have it, and after the special aired, "everything changed," Henner tells TVGuide.com. Curiosity peaked, she's participating in more studies, she's writing a book, and the biggest change of all, she has a new gig: as a consultant on CBS' new show Unforgettable. Starring Poppy Montgomery as Carrie Wells, a NY City cop with HSAM (which was formerly called hyperthymesia), the drama is based on J. Robert Lennon's short story "The Rememberer." The pilot script had been shelved for a few years until Henner's 60 Minutes report came along.Fall TV: Get the lowdown on this season's must-see new shows"They took it off the shelf and said, 'This is going to be a great show now that people know what this is and it's being explored,'" Henner says. "[CBS Entertainment President] Nina Tassler, who has known me for a long time, asked me to be part of it. I said, 'Oh yeah, I'd love to be a consultant.' The show shoots in NY and I live [in Los Angeles]. I get to go in and talk to the writers and give them some ideas, read all the scripts."But most importantly, she gets to put her memory to use and fact-check."[They sent me a preview], so I go online and it says, 'Hyperthymesia! Six people in the world have this! These people remember everything!' Then you see someone say, 'Hey, Carrie, show them that thing you do. March 27, 1998.' And so I'm thinking, 'That was a Friday, I flew back from NY to Los Angeles,'" Henner says. "And she goes, 'It was a Tuesday.' And I go, 'No! No! It was a Friday!' I start texting Ed [Redlich, the show's creator]! ... They ended up changing it because they had to. I said, 'You have to establish right from the beginning that she's good at this. Not the first thing out of the box and she's losing it.' ... So I'm always catching things like that in the script. Or there was a reference to a piece of music. They said it came out in 1983 and I said, 'No, it came out in 1985.'"Watch the 60 Minutes report on Marilu HennerHenner has known since she was 6 that she has an unusual memory, but never thought much of it until a friend brought it up when she was 18 - or more specifically, on Sunday, May 24, 1970 - and she started paying attention to other people's memories. The former Taxi star remembers each day vividly and can tell you every detail of what she experienced. The constant stockpiling of information is not overwhelming for Henner and she never struggles to remember anything, but the same can't be said for the others with HSAM. Jill Price, who also has the ability and appeared on a Primetime special, was greatly overwhelmed by the skill, which came as a shock to Henner. "I think, in writing Carrie, they sort of took that aspect from [Price's] story, but it was never overwhelming for me. It's just the ultimate organization tool," Henner says. "It's just recorded and then it's there and then it's easy access. Although I've seen my brain scans and they're pretty freaky!"Taking even more poetic license with the show, Redlich & Co. included a caveat with Carrie's memory: The only thing she doesn't remember is the night of her sister's murder. "Certainly I never had anything traumatic like that that was blocked out, but this is television, so we have to make it interesting," Henner, 59, says. "I have no idea [if the others with HSAM have blocked something out]. We didn't get into group therapy. But it's a major story point."One thing she was adamant about was how to portray Carrie's flashbacks. People with HSAM see everything through their own eyes again. In other words, they're not watching themselves, à la Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. "But you can't have an actress with a camera on her forehead ... so they do it in a very interesting way," Henner says. "You know she's in her body in present time reliving it, being inside of herself. They show her, for example, kneeling over the body and she remembers, and you get the idea that she's back at the crime scene.Fall Preview: Get scoop on your favorite returning showsHenner will guest-star on the show, most likely during November sweeps, as Carrie's aunt who has Alzheimer's. In the meantime, she continues to dole out personal stories for the show to incorporate, is finishing her book about memory and is tormenting her 15-year-old son, Joey, who she believes has HSAM too. He cannot be tested until he's 16 and it is unknown if HSAM is hereditary because no one else with it has children. "He's not owning it yet, but I know he has it," Henner says. "It's not that he doesn't admit it; he doesn't want to be challenged too much. I sometimes say the wrong date just for him to go, 'No, Mom, you're wrong. You were mad at me that day because of blah-blah-blah.' 'No, I don't remember being mad at you.' So we go back and forth."Using a little white lie to mess with her son, however, is the only time Henner would ever lie. "I like accuracy. Not only do I want to be right, but I couldn't track a lie because so many things are connected," she says. "[HSAM] is totally a blessing! Oh my gosh! I've never even seen one downside to it. Nothing. Anyone with it won't want to lose it."Unforgettable premieres Tuesday at 10/9c on CBS.

Fresh Clip From The New The Thing

Exclusive look at alien prequelYes, it's somewhat confusing for the 2011 prequel to 1982's The Thing to also be called The Thing, but it's definitely the new one that we're dealing with now, as we present a new clip from the new story of alien goings-on in the Antarctic and the dangers of thoughtlessly thawing out shapeshifting beasties. This story picks up a thread briefly touched on in the John Carpenter Thing, wherein we learn that the alien had been discovered under the Antarctic ice, deep frozen, and brought inside by the staff of a Norwegian Antarctic base. Given the havoc it wreaked in Carpenter's film, it's no spoiler to say that not all of them would, with hindsight, describe the decision to bring the thing indoors as a good one. The Thing (2011) stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinuoye-Agbaje, Ulrich Thomsen and Kim Bubbs. It's directed by features newcomer Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. (and try saying that three times fast). The Thing will hit UK screens on December 2. Pray that it's not snowing by then, or we'll all get the heebie-jeebies on the way home.

Scott Rudin, who has worked with Baumbach on the likes of Greenberg and Margot at the Wedding, is on to produce and according to Deadline, HBO is close to ordering a pilot based on Baumbach's script, co-written with Franzen. We can see the appeal for the channel - it could be another complex, multilayered family drama along the lines of one of HBO's earlier hits, Six Feet Under...
